SquareRooms Issue 181 Mid-Year 2020
Timeless Classic Designed in a modern-colonial style, this family home exudes character and luxury 1 Master bedroom and walk-in closet The original master bedroom was given to the male homeowner’s parents and a long common room became the new master suite. Half of the room was converted into a boutique-like walk-in closet, and Alvin designed a pull-out wardrobe with glass panel doors which could accommodate more clothes than traditional closets. He also installed a storage cabinet on one end as the female owner had a number of bags to display. An island in the middle keeps watches and jewellery in order. 2 Daughter’s bedroom The homeowners’ daughter loves pink, so it was used throughout this room. She also wanted a Hollywood-worthy vanity. Besides surrounding the mirror with bulbs for a glamorous, old-school look, Alvin took the idea further with watch and jewellery compartments on both sides of the dresser and topped the table with glass. 3 Living and Dining Although the idea was to make these areas look spacious and airy, Alvin created lots of visual impact and played up the old-English feel by adding plaster mouldings across the walls. He also added ceiling cornices to balance out the sizeable beams here, one of which was added to hide pipes from a newly constructed bathroom next to the dining area. Vinyl flooring was used as it is easy to clean and can withstand heavy traffic, particularly helpful since the homeowners like to entertain. 4 Porch Featuring French doors, a bay window and wooden ceiling beams, the entrance is full of colonial-style details to set the tone for the house. However, modern-day materials ensure easy maintenance and longevity. The white parts of the ceiling that resemble painted planks are actually partitions with groove lines while the “log” beams were made with 3D prints and special effect paint. This prevents decay, termites and rot, common problems with terrace houses. For this same reason, the decking was also made with composite wood instead of real planks. 5 Common bathroom The female homeowner knew exactly what she wanted for the bathroom on the first floor, which was inspired by a bathroom she saw in a restaurant. Clad in grey subway tiles and mosaic flooring from Hafary, the bathroom differs from the two upstairs which are mainly white, but the darker hue was chosen for this room as it’s easier to maintain since many guests come by. 76 S Q U A R E R O O M S SPACE Intermediate terrace house SIZE 2,215 sq ft LOCATION Upper East Coast DESIGNER Alvin Peh of Jialux Interior RENO PERIOD 5 months 1 Tampines North Drive 1 T-Space #02-14/15 S'pore 528559 Tel: 8121 3080 www.jialuxinterior.com JIALUX INTERIOR PTE.
