With alluring neon signs, vintage furnishings, and artsy décor at every corner, this Instragrammable, pastel haven is sure to make you feel like a protagonist in a Wes Anderson-esque film.
Located in the vibrant neighbourhood of Little India, The Great Madras flaunts a cosy, vintage-inspired interior. From original brass cinema seats from the old Capitol Cinema, to old-school spiral staircases, this boutique hotel takes travellers down on a nostalgic trip to the past. The building which houses the hotel also contains historical significance, as a pre-war Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) housing block. The exterior was then kept largely unatlered to honour the rich history of the place.
An open-air reception lobby welcomes guests, amidst pots of greenery and tropical-themed wall décor. The Great Madras also skillfully incorporates a one-of-a-kind, classic charm to its otherwise typical hotel facilities, such as turning a common laundry room to an old-school laundromat, having a retro pool, and even providing in-house barber services.
Each room interior draws the attention of guests with an eye-catching feature wall, dressed in tropical-themed wallpapers with images of ferns and lush forests. The hotel also provides hostel-style co-living spaces, each equipped with a spacious king-sized bed. The more extravagant rooms would be the Balcony and Courtyard room, which allow guests to have exclusive access to their own balcony space.
