Learn How to Colour Your Home at these Lively New Workshops

Always wanted to infuse your home with some colour but were not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we get you. After all, neutral shades are pretty comforting. You can’t really go wrong with a pared-down Scandinavian living room or a black and white bathroom. But just because colour can be scary to work with doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, especially if you like the thought of a lively, eye-catching home!

If getting starting with colour on your own is too daunting, why not join a workshop? The colour-savvy ladies behind Big Blue Trunk, The Cinnamon Room and Mishell Leong Art recently teamed up to launch Colour Your Home, a new series of workshops meant to teach you everything you need to know about colourful interiors. We went down to Big Blue Trunk to check it out—here’s what you can expect.

Learn about colour theory

The first part of the workshop is all about how to choose and pair colours. Listen to Deepti from Big Blue Trunk as she explains the basics of colour theory, using her Annie Sloan colour chart to show how colours can be combined with ease. The gist of it? Colours in the same area of the chart will make for a subtle look, while colours on opposite sides of the triangle will make for a more striking contrast. Bonus tip: you should always ground bright colours with something neutral!

Find out how to decorate

After Deepti’s exploration of colour theory, you’ll get to hear Mishell and Visha talk about decorating with colour in their own areas of expertise—art and soft furnishings! From Mishell, you’ll learn how to pick art that is meaningful to you and how to make it look great in any room, no matter what it may clash with. We especially loved her tips about framing!

Visha, of course, had some great insight into choosing rugs and cushions for the home. She’s worked with homeowners who love colours, as well as those who are intimidated by it and would rather stick to neutrals, so you’ll get plenty of great advice no matter which end of the spectrum you fall on.

Practice what you learned

This hands-on part of the workshop is where you get to apply everything you just learned. You’ll start out with an array of (adorable) miniature furniture, from wardrobes to tiny fans, all painted in vastly different colours, alongside some of Mishell’s sized-down artworks and cut-outs of Visha’s rugs. This is all laid out against cardboard “walls” in neutral shades. The goal? To mix and match all of these elements and craft a home that is completely unique!

Everyone in the room ended up with something personal and unexpected. Ours was a bold mix of black, red and grey, a combination we would have never attempted before, but which ended up looking just right.

Like the sound of that? Join the next one!

If you want to dip your toes into the waters of colour theory and learn to liven up your home at the same time, or even if you just want to try something new and meet some like-minded people, this workshop will be well worth your while. Keep an eye on the workshop page for upcoming dates!
