Elements of Victorian design sit comfortably next to modern finishes in this unique home.
Living room: The living room and balcony were combined to create an open-concept living and dining area with an additional reading corner. The archway lends the latter a cosy feel.
A family of seven requires a lot of space; each area of the home has to take into account how it fits into the family’s lifestyle. For this project, the team at Underrated Studio was given the task to create a living space that serves the needs of a married couple and their five children.
Entrance: A glass partition with a decal was added to the home’s entryway, lending the living area more privacy.
For example, the new open kitchen comes with lots of storage space as requested by the lady of the house.
The dining area has been converted into a home office for her husband, with a built-in study table and a TV console. It also doubles as a study where the children can relax, do their schoolwork or enjoy some entertainment.
Walkway: This area that links the living room to the bedrooms simply exudes elegance. From the double-door entrance to the homogenous marble tiles and the vintage-inspired lighting, it’s an inviting walkway that evokes classic glamour.
The homeowners wanted a modern Victorian theme for their abode and chose a colour scheme to match. Their goal was to have a unique and distinctive style for their space, drawn to the allure and elegance that Victorian interior design has to offer. The design team took on this brief and artfully fused the traditional Victorian style with modern touches.
Drinks station: The homeowners regularly host family and friends, so they requested a separate counter to prepare drinks without having to enter the kitchen. Now sitting between the kitchen and the living space, the drinks station comes with an evocative backdrop that hearkens back to the family’s preferred Victorian style.
Every part of the house except the two bathrooms was renovated. One particularly unique area is the kitchen, which now has two entrances. It can either be accessed from the living room or the bedroom corridor.
Kitchen: Storage space was a priority in the kitchen and the rows of new cabinets certainly address this concern. The pink backsplash tiles, subtle countertop hues and striking La Germania stove contrast beautifully against the white cabinets, imbuing the kitchen with some colour.
This means the children can still get to the kitchen without the need to go through the living space when their parents are hosting guests. The adults get privacy while the kids can go about their daily activities in their bedrooms and the kitchen without disturbing them.
Kids’ room: The existing wardrobe carcass that was still in good condition was retained in the children’s bedroom and enhanced with a playful new door panel, complementing the scalloped mural framing the bed.
The kitchen underwent a complete overhaul, with shaker cabinets and features like a large island and an arched cabinet door to hide the cooker hood.
Bedroom: The main suite is pared-back and elegant, instantly recognisable as a space for the adults of the house.
At 35 years old, this executive flat had only been renovated once by the previous owner. This makeover gave it the refresh it needed, making the family’s dream of a functional and inspiring abode come true.
