Can’t settle on an interior design theme? This project in Bukit Batok proves you can have it all under one roof.
Most homeowners feel boxed in by space when it comes to designing their dream home. But what if you had all the space you wanted? One lucky homeowner in Western Singapore, who managed to snag an executive maisonette – a rare HDB find – took full advantage of that extra square footage and transformed his home into a stunning, eclectic loft. Rather than sticking to just one design style, he mixed japandi, industrial, and mid-century elements with a sprinkle of heritage to tie it all together.
Step inside and you’ll instantly feel it. From the Peranakan- inspired tiles underfoot to the rattan bench inviting you to kick off your shoes, the nostalgic touches make everyone who walks through the door feel at home at once. Bamboo blinds bathe the foyer in sunlight, creating the perfect little nook for the homeowner’s thriving plant babies.
This natural light spills right over into the kitchen, where the morning routine of making breakfast has become an act of self-care. The industrial vibe kicks in with large format grey tiles expanding the space, while deep blue cabinetry with silver accents gives the kitchen a sleek, modern edge.
To warm things up, greige kit-kat tiles grace the backsplash, and fluted details add flair to the kitchen island. Come evening, warm lighting illuminates the space, transforming the cool, industrial vibe into something much cosier.
Beyond the glass doors, the dining room – doubling as a study – keeps things low- key. It’s something of a gallery, showcasing framed paintings and cherished family photos documenting the kids’ milestones.
On the other side, a plush, sprawling couch beckons, flanked by rear speakers that take movie nights to the next level. And with a partial false ceiling allowing for spotlights, they’ve got the perfect lighting to set the mood without feeling cramped.
Heading upstairs, the master bedroom gives a nod to the mid-century modern style, with a vintage adjustable desk lamp repurposed as a bedside light and dark wood furniture sporting clean, minimalist lines.
Opting for blinds over curtains also adds a subtle throwback to the eighties, giving the room an understated yet stylish feel.
The bathroom is where it all truly clicks— wooden textures meet cool grey tones, and the subway tiles, laid horizontally, add that extra bit of charm.
Even the Peranakan flair makes its way upstairs, this time in the form of ventilation blocks. Not only do they keep the steam at bay, but they also pull the entire look together elegantly.
