While it may be tempting to select the most eye-catching materials and fixtures when designing a kitchen, it can sometimes result in a mishmash of textures that may feel visually confusing and overpowering. Instead, invest in only one or two focal points and let the other elements support these choices – we show you how here.
- Go bold on the backsplash
We all know that a kitchen backsplash protects the walls from any oil splatters while making cleanup of dirt and grime easy. But these fixtures can also serve as a strong decorative element within your utilitarian zone. From subway tiles to geometric patterns, the options are endless! But because of the strong visual statement these backsplashes make, it’s important to keep the rest of the space relatively muted so as to not overwhelm the space.

- Install an accent countertop
Over the years, we’ve grown accustomed to the use of quartz and other natural stones as a countertop material in the kitchen. However, accent countertops have been on the rise lately, and with their interesting textures, it’s not hard to see why. Just take this kitchen island for example, which sees an extended wood panel mounted above the marble-effect quartz countertop, where its wood textures stand out against its predominantly white surroundings.

- Have fun with furniture
We all have a favourite colour, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to incorporate said colour into your kitchen. But as trends and tastes evolve, sometimes it might be better to add this particular hue via something that will be easy to change down the road. For instance, say you love the colour red. But instead of installing bright red countertops, opt for red-accented bar stools which add a fun splash of colour without the long-term commitment.

- Create coloured cabinets
In the kitchen below, the mostly white space gets a nice kick of colour – as well as a great focal point – from cabinets that have been clad over in navy blue laminates. What’s more, the best part about this is should you want to give your kitchen a quick update in the future, you can easily paint over these cabinets with a different coat of paint. The more vibrant you go with the colour of the cabinets, however, the more you should support it with neutrals to create a balanced aesthetic that’s visually pleasing.

- Utilise fetching fixtures
It’s hard to overstate the importance of good lighting in your kitchen. But there’s so much more you can do than just installing a few down lights on the ceiling and a couple of strip lights under the cabinets. Decorative pendant lights and even chandeliers are very much in trend right now, and they can be an excellent focal point in any kitchen. And if you’re worried about keeping these fixtures clean, look for those that don’t have too many nooks and crannies to them, which will allow you to easily wipe them down with a wet cloth.
