A modest backdrop lays the groundwork for this bright and airy HDB flat.
Materialising the homeowners’ request for a simple, white space, the design team at Darwin Interior dove into a luxurious makeover. Led by Gifford Zhang, they drew inspiration from the couple’s vision of minimalist luxury to redefine the flat’s presence as a contemporary residence.
An unpretentious white and grey palette was adopted, with the occasional dark tones to mix things up and add contrast, resulting in an understated matrimonial home with bright and airy charm.

Overall view
Whitewashed walls were paired with unobtrusive furnishings and complementary monochromatic tones to create a bright and airy living zone with a sense of calm. The minimalist and contemporary design also allows hand-picked art pieces to take centre stage.
Kitchen entrance
By changing the kitchen’s original swing doors to glass pocket doors, the kitchen is afforded more space for the owners to move around. Additionally, the glass panels help encourage the flow of natural light between the kitchen and communal zones.
Kitchen
Form and function merge in the kitchen, where quartz countertops ramp up the durability of the cooking zone and concealed cabinetry offers plenty of storage room for cookware. The all-white palette also serves to further enhance the illusion of a bigger space.
Main bedroom
A private space for winding down at the end of a long day, the homeowners requested for their main suite to have a dark and moody colour scheme. To achieve this, dark surface materials and fittings were installed, then paired with crisp white bedding for a balanced look.
Common bathroom
Against its neutral-hued surroundings, a black quartz tabletop used on the vanity imbues visual interest into the utilitarian zone. Doing so also allowed the designer to transform a typically unimpressive fixture into a striking showpiece.
