Unconventional design elements find a home in this dark and intriguing condo unit.

Some people love the luxe vibe of freshly developed condo units—and some do away with the developer’s concept entirely! The family residing in this condo unit certainly fell into the latter camp, with homeowner and designer Vincent Tan from Darwin Interior choosing to restructure and reorientate the entire home, prioritising spaciousness and flow of movement.

Despite the small size of the apartment, the family opted for a dark theme to facilitate easy maintenance, then balanced out the dusky colours with a suitable layout and carefully considered lighting.

Living room

The living area maximises its space by incorporating a fluted TV feature wall that also acts to conceal the entrance to the common bathroom.

To ensure that the TV could fit within the tight dimensions of this revamped space, the surface was extended with a creative iron bar feature that allows a peek into the back of the dry kitchen.

Kitchen

Simple and streamlined to avoid crowding the narrow space, the kitchen was fitted out with laminates from Jennings and a Vulcan sintered surface slab from Lian Hin for a sturdy backsplash.

Main bedroom

The homeowners’ favourite space in the house, the main bedroom is particularly unique with its large fluted feature wall fronted by a backlit stone headboard.

The result is a hotel-feel retreat from the outside world, allowing the parents to indulge in a sense of luxury.

Son’s room

The son’s room received an extra dose of experimentation, now equipped with a reversed loft. Instead of opting for a loft bed with a study space below, the study was elevated above the bed. This makes the space safer to use, as the loft area only needs to be accessed in the daytime.

For some extra pizzazz, an asymmetrical feature wall was created using neon strip lighting reflected by the study’s glass railing. An especially interesting detail? The contours of the feature wall merge with the glass to form the letter “V,” a shared initial in the family.
