Clean-lined designs and natural textures helped to create the soothing Japanese-style home this couple was after.

Japanese homes and businesses often have open shelving by the door for shoes, an idea that’s replicated here. Under-cabinetry lighting helps elevate its appearance, while a settee and tinted mirror panel installed above makes it easy for the homeowners to slip on shoes and check their appearance before setting out.
Main bedroom and closet
A spare bedroom was turned into a walk-in closet, connected to the minimally furnished main bedroom with a custom sliding door reminiscent of a Japanese fusuma. A mid-tone wood-effect vinyl flooring visually connects both rooms for a spacious appearance.
Dining and living space
The owners wanted to mimic a contemporary Japanese restaurant setting while enjoying their 65-inch TV. The designer thus created a long feature wall, integrating stone-textured panels and uplights in the dining zone while hiding a structural ceiling beam and cables behind the floor-to-ceiling entertainment unit.
The kitchen was kept as streamlined as possible, keeping in line with the couple’s wishes for a calming abode. As both homeowners are rather tall, it was also important to keep the layout spacious. That said, the owners are lucky enough to have gorgeous views of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, so a simple set-up comprising a fold-down table and chair was placed at the far end for them to take in the scenery.
Deep grey tiles create a calm and comforting environment while wood-look surfaces on the vanity and in the shower area promote further relaxation by evoking the feel of a cedar-panelled onsen. Adding further interest here is a swathe of tiles in a Japanese inspired pattern that strengthens the theme of the home.
