Rugs and cushions can go a long way to add colour and personality to a home. We spoke with expert and maximalist enthusiast Visha Nelson, founder of The Cinnamon Room to find out more.
Maximalism can be a difficult style to pull off. What’s your top tip for making it work?
Cohesiveness is key! Different graphic patterns and textures in complementary colours can create this cohesive look, but dare to pair these with a bold and unexpected accent colour. Thoughtfully curating objects and artworks you have collected is another wonderful way of adding interesting elements to your design.
How do you suggest combining various patterns without clashing? Are there certain patterns that go especially well together?
When mixing patterns in a maximalist space, have a distinctive and bold graphic base as the dominant feature, then incorporate subtler designs. This balanced mix allows each pattern to “breathe.” The layering of patterns can also be highlighted with contrasting colours. For instance, a statement black-and-white pattern makes for a fantastic base, which can then be paired with something like a striped fuchsia.
As for patterns that go well together, I love pairing geometric designs with timeless stripes.
You work with a lot of bold rugs and cushion covers. What are your favourite ways to decorate with these striking pieces?
We love pairing contemporary rugs with cushions that stand out in their own right, often incorporating luxurious metallic finishes to the mix. This added shimmer and shine really helps to tell a unique story in your home.
How do you recommend placing and styling bold and colourful rugs? When is one large rug better than a combination of small rugs?
I am a huge fan of layering rugs to create defined pockets of space by using a combination of rugs in different sizes and shapes. A round rug will quickly anchor a corner when rectangular rugs are already in situ, adding movement and flow and an alternative perspective to your floor treatment. In a ginormous room, one large rug would be the way to anchor each functional area, creating a focal point in that specific space. Other than that, I would always say to mix it up and keep it varied and interesting!
How can homeowners pick the right cushions to suit and transform their living room?
When choosing your cushions, consider where they will be placed and always ensure that they contrast with the base furniture. This will make for a striking accent, whether it’s on a sofa, an armchair or even your bed.
