For the owners of this 4-room BTO flat, home equals a place to relax and wind down after a long journey. The two parents used to frequently travel for work and they quickly realised they needed a calming space that would evoke a sense of warmth and familiarity upon their return. This resulted in Studio FortyFour’s soothing and restful design, turning their home into a respite from work and the bustling city.

Household shelter
Like many HDB residents, these homeowners wanted to get their household shelter out of sight. Studio FortyFour crafted a seamless panel cover, making the shelter accessible through a hidden door in the case of emergencies. In order to maximise storage space in this area, the new wall was also fitted out with hidden sliding panels, which make room for shoes and other small items.
Storage unit
The custom-built wall connects to a large storage unit around the corner, the shelves made of a striking terrazzo-style laminate for a much-needed pop of colour against the light grey panelling. A pastel green wall mirrors the hue of the shelving on the right-hand side for a sense of continuity.
Bedroom
Working with the bedroom’s space constraints, the designers crafted a thin, cushioned headboard that would leave enough room around the bed to access the wardrobe. The final set-up consists of a MUJI bedframe, customised Blafink cushions and a rod sourced from a carpenter to keep the headboard in place.
Kitchen
As the place that connects the rest of the home, the kitchen was the starting point for the flat’s overall design. The greatest challenge was to get the detailing on the island right, as this required some coordination between the carpenter and KompacPlus. Another nifty feature in this area is the small window on the left-hand side, which opens to the service yard and allows the family to communicate as they move through different spaces.
