Inspired by the view of Coney Island from her HDB flat, this single homeowner kept her abode simple and down-to-earth with lots of flexibility for future changes.
Most homeowners don’t consider what’s outside of their flat when they embark on their home renovation. For Joyce, however, it was the key to the entire design, giving David Chong from Happe Design Atelier an unusual brief. The view of Coney Island from her window became the focal point of the flat, complemented by a soft pastel palette that doesn’t distract from the natural beauty of the exteriors.
The final look is simple yet luxurious, with an understated appeal that invites rest and introspection.

Designer: David Chong from Happe Design Atelier
Reno period: 10 weeks

Living area
Preferring loose furniture over built-ins, Joyce got the living room of her dreams, equipped with cosy, minimalist pieces that yet draw the eye. Opting for furniture over cabinetry also gives her the opportunity to play around with the layout in the future, making the living area a flexible and creative space.
Study
Cleverly designed to maximise the compact square footage, the study incorporates a desk, plenty of storage space and even a cosy reading nook. The Lamitak cabinetry keeps the room bright and warm, its natural finish once again aligned with the homeowner’s priorities.
Kitchen
Fitted out with a KompacPlus backsplash and matching countertops, the kitchen is built to last while retaining the overall dainty charm.
Bedroom and bathroom
HDB flats rarely have room for separate wet and dry bathrooms, yet the design team made it work in this three-room flat. Taking Joyce’s preference for loose pieces into consideration, the wet bathroom is dominated by a luxurious, freestanding bathtub from Viva Nueva, while the dry bathroom provides Joyce with a roomy vanity.
