In order to transform this HDB flat’s originally small and dingy living room into a bright and airy space, some hacking was required. One of the walls was expertly removed, the home’s third bedroom converted into a cosy plywood platform with convenient storage drawers. The homeowners can now relax, work or entertain friends in this snuggly corner, all while enjoying the Scandinavian-style open space throughout the rest of the living area. A variety of flooring treatments makes it easy to visually separate one zone from the other without compromising the room’s size in the slightest. The abundance of natural light paired with the Nordic colour palette effectively makes this the young couple’s new favourite room.

Household shelter

A custom-built shoe cabinet not only provides handy storage for the homeowners’ footwear collection but also hides away the unsightly household shelter and DB box behind closed doors. Keeping the bulk of the storage contained in this full-height closet has another advantage as well, leaving the floor clean and uncluttered and creating the illusion of a more expansive space in the living area.

Kitchen

While the homeowners’ favourite blue hue takes precedence in the kitchen, livening up the grey flooring, a dash of wooden tones keeps the look earthy and balanced, retaining the restful Scandinavian vibe. Custom-built using solid plywood and a laminate finish, the lush kitchen cabinets contrast softly with the wooden EDL Compact countertop, making the whole room pop.

Bedroom

Shared by the young couple, this private suite is clad in a lighter shade of blue than the common areas of the house, making for a more restful environment. A full-height wardrobe was custom-built to fit perfectly into the small room, giving the impression of a larger space with its white coating. Wood-look vinyl flooring and bedside tables from IKEA round off the bedroom’s ambience with a warm, earthy touch.

Bathroom

A custom-built plywood vanity floats over the tiled flooring in the bathroom, sporting a dusky laminate finish that contrasts boldly with the neutral tiling. A veined EDL Compact slab makes for a hard-wearing surface around the countertop washbasin, giving the Scandinavian-inspired bathroom a spark of contemporary elegance.
